I’ve been there, you’ve probably been there, most people have been there — saying “yes” because you don’t want to offend someone. But I think, after trying this out myself, it’s time to take this time of year as an opportunity to truly enjoy yourself, get a bit of a break, and feed your body some nourishment (whether with time off, food, or family and friends). I want to enjoy my time with my loved ones this Christmas, immerse myself in traditions we’ve held all these years, and let go of the little stresses that make this time of year hectic instead of blissful. So many times I go into this “holiday break” time frazzled, the time flies by and at the end of it all I feel more exhausted and stressed trying to be a people pleaser.
I’m going to try a few things different this time around and I suggest you do it, too!
Keep it light. I’m aiming for simplicity this season. I’m not going to say “yes” out of fear. I’m going to say “no” to things this season that don’t really serve me…if I think they’re going to wear me down and take up my precious time rather than feed my body – well…I’m going to decline the invite! I’m going to embrace the festivities that I love…the ones that make me laugh, that remind me that I’m loved and that allow me to show others how much I love them.
Planning. My favourite thing to do is cut up my veggies for recipes and either freeze them or put them in the fridge if it’s only a couple days until I cook that recipe. This saves me stress during the holidays – my mum taught me this! You feel crazy cutting and chopping and organizing all day but come the cook-a-thon day and there’s guests arriving at 5pm…you’ll be glad you did this! It saves so much time. So if this sounds like you or you can alter this tip to fit something else you do – USE IT! Do your errands, make your lists, shop, and avoid the last-minute stress. Oh, and save the cleaning for after the guests leave – enjoy the love your surrounded with.
Pamper Yourself. Okay, okay…maybe you don’t even have to pamper yourself, but please — take care of yourself. I’m intending on doing lots of self-care this holiday season. I’m not giving up my healthy eating habits or my exercise…in fact – I may be able to enjoy a bit more of it since I’m out of school for a bit…If your exercise routine has to bust – try doing something active with your family that is also fun…like skating! It’s a great time of year to enjoy a few strides and your body will thank you. If you’re in Toronto have a look here for some indoor or outdoor arenas near you. Otherwise – look locally! You’ve likely got some arenas nearby! Don’t use the holidays as an excuse to slack – this will dampen your feelings…I promise. Indulge if you want but don’t throw it all out the window, prioritize exercise (even in the form of fun!), relaxation, and sleep! This will help you stay healthy during stressful times. Having trouble relaxing? How about you give yourself a 3-minute breathing space. Don’t like that one — try this one or find another video on youtube that you prefer!
Good luck this festive season my friends – I’ll be embracing family, tradition, and unconditional love – I hope you can enjoy yourselves this season, too!
